History
The idea for an association was developed through a consultative process with Housing Managers in March 2005 sponsored by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to gauge the need for a First Nations Housing Managers organization. This session included a review of the First Nations housing environments, a discussion about past, present and future challenges and trends, and presentations by other Aboriginal organizations. During the session participants identified the key purposes to be served by a national organization; what it might look like; and, what would be needed to get such an organization up and running.
The focus group session resulted in the unified support for a National First Nations Housing Managers Association. Participants formed a national working group and selected four co-chairs among themselves.
Outputs of the session included a draft mission statement; key values and elements of a successful working model; and necessary strategies and directions to implementing such a model.
In November 2006 Housing Managers from across Canada met to discuss the continued development of their organization which would lead to full incorporation of the “First Nations National Housing Managers Association” The principle objective of the national meeting was to gain a detailed understanding of the expectations that the Housing Managers had for the Association. During that meeting the Housing Managers organized to build the Association to the point where incorporation could take place.
On February 8, 2007 the First Nations National Housing Managers Association was incorporated and a contribution agreement with Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada was developed for the marketing and membership communication strategy. The FNNHMA graciously acknowledges their support both from a financial and information perspective.
